Welcome to Rosebud County

Rosebud County was established on February 1, 1901 and is located in Southeastern Montana covering approximately 5,027 square miles (5,010 square miles is land and 17 square miles is water). Rosebud County is Montana’s twenty-second most populous county, with an estimated population of 8,329 as of the latest census in 2020.

Other cities and towns in Rosebud County include Angela, Ashland, Birney, Colstrip, Hathaway, Ingomar, Lame Deer, Rosebud, and Sumatra. A large portion of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation lies within Rosebud County.

  • Rosebud County is the fourth largest County by land area in the State of Montana.
  • Topography of Rosebud County is mostly rolling with small hills.  Elevations range from 2,441 feet above sea level near Hathaway to 4,807 feet above sea level in the Little Wolf Mountains west of Colstrip.
  • The County’s leading source of income are from agriculture, tourism, railroad, coal mining and electrical generation.
  • There are 1,165 miles of County road.
  • Medical facilities are located in Ashland, Lame Deer, Colstrip and Forsyth.

Landfill Notice:

Landfill canister sites are for household garbage. Construction material and tree branches need to be taken to the Forsyth transfer station or the Colstrip Landfill. The offsite canisters are mainly intended for Rosebud County residents who do not have trash pick-up service. These sites are being monitored, misuse of the disposal sites cause issues for residents and our workers who maintain them. Any person/s found violating the sites may be fined or prosecuted. Please respect the rules set forth by Rosebud County so that these sites can stay operational.

NOTICE OF PENDING ATTACHMENT OF A TAX LIEN

On Thursday, August 1, 2024 the Rosebud County Treasurer will attach a property lien to the property on which the 2023 taxes are delinquent.  The delinquent taxes, including penalties, interest and costs are a lien upon the property and that unless delinquent taxes, penalties, interest and costs are paid prior to August 1, 2024 a tax lien will be attached and may be assigned to a third party.  MCA 15-17-122 A complete list of all property on which taxes are delinquent is on file in the office of the Rosebud County Treasurer and is open to public inspection and examination Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.
